Eirikson, 행운의 레이프 (970-1018 to 1025)로도 알려져 있는 Leiv( Leif ) Eirikson 은 

아메리카 대륙에 발을 디딘 최초의 유럽인으로 여겨지는 노르웨이 탐험가이다. 크리스토퍼

콜럼버스 보다 천년 전, 아이슬란드 사람들의 전설에 따르면, 그는 일반적으로 북미 해안으로

해석되는 빈란드 (Vinland)에 노르웨이인 정착지를 설립했다. 레이프와 그의 선원들이 만든

정착지는 약 1,000년 전에 거주했던 L'Anse aux Meadows (랑스 오 메도우즈)라고 불리는

캐나다 뉴펀들랜드에서 발견된 노르웨이 정착지의 유적과 일치한다는 추측이 계속되고 있다.
레이프의 출생지는 알려져 있지 않지만 아이슬란드에 있었던 것으로 추정된다. 그의 아버지인

붉은 에릭( Erik the Red)은 그린란드에 최초의 북유럽인 정착지를 세웠고, 레이프는 나중에

그곳에서 자랐다. 빈란드로 항해하고 아버지가 사망한 후 레이프는 그린란드 정착촌의 우두

머리가 되었다. 그에게는 두 명의 알려진 아들이 있었다. 헤브리디스 (Hebrides)에서 태어난,

토르길스 ( Thorgils) , 그리고 그의 뒤를 이어 그린란드의 족장이 된 토르켈 (Thorkell) 이다.
